MPS Receives $261,000 State Literacy Grant

MEDFORD, Mass. – Medford Public Schools has been awarded a $261,630 grant as part of the Partnership for Reading Success–Massachusetts (PRISM) grant programs. 

The grant will be used for resources, targeted coaching, and professional learning support to evaluate, select, purchase, launch, and implement high-quality instructional literacy materials for MPS students in grades 4–12.

“Thank you to the Governor’s Office for awarding MPS this grant to expand our ability to deliver high-quality literacy instruction across the district,” said Superintendent Dr. Suzanne B. Galusi. “In an ever-changing educational landscape, the needs of our students continue to evolve. This new grant award will equip our staff with the resources they need to support skilled instruction for students, enabling them to achieve at grade level and beyond.”

The grant was awarded as part of a $24.7 million grant distribution to 71 different school districts and education collaboratives across the Commonwealth. According to the Governor’s Office, the mission of this latest grant cycle was to strengthen literacy instruction and improve reading outcomes for students across Massachusetts.

“Selecting high quality instructional materials at the middle grades advances the extensive work that is well underway at our K-5 schools and supports the educational goals of the district, our schools, and our dedicated staff members,” said Assistant Superintendent of Academics and Instruction Dr. Kim Talbot. “With this allocation, we can position our educators as informed investigators of exactly the curriculum our students need to thrive.

The PRISM grant programs support districts at every stage of implementing high-quality literacy instruction. From building strong early literacy systems, to adopting new instructional materials, PRISM grants expand evidence-based practices for students through their senior year.
