Community Update from Space Utilization Task Force

Dear MPS Community,

The Space Utilization Task Force has been working diligently to evaluate the district’s long-term facility needs, educational models, and structural capacity at our middle schools. As part of this work, the Task Force is examining the feasibility of a Grade 5-6 model at the McGlynn and a Grade 7-8 model at the Andrews, including the academic and extracurricular programming that would support such a structure. This analysis will inform a comprehensive recommendation to the School Committee. 

As part of our Task Force’s commitment to transparency, we are sharing an important update regarding our timeline. To ensure this process is thorough and fully aligned with the district's best interests, the Task Force will be requesting the School Committee consider an extension to the target implementation timeframe at their upcoming July 20, 2026 meeting. This proposal would shift implementation of the Task Force’s recommendations from School Year (SY) 2027/2028 to SY2028/2029 at the earliest. 

While we understand the desire for swift solutions, our priority is to determine the best approach for our community, not simply the fastest one. It is the opinion of the Task Force that this extension to SY 28/29 is necessary to ensure our decision-making is intentional, thoughtful, and collaborative. Driven by data, and with adequate lead time and stakeholder input, the Task Force aims to support a high-quality, equitable, and sustainable learning environment for all students.

The Task Force is fully committed to keeping the community and the School Committee informed and involved. We will release a memo with more details on the process to date after the School Committee hears the Task Force’s proposal in July.
